The 2030 Winter Olympics Games confirmed in Nice
July 24, 2024
On Wednesday 24 July in Paris, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) awarded the organisation of the 26th Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2030 to France, and more specifically to the Southern Alps!
After the historic arrival of the Tour de France in Nice last weekend and the kick-off of the first soccer events at the Nice stadium as part of the Paris 2024 Olympics this evening, Nice Côte d’Azur will be hosting the 2030 Winter Olympics Games!
The 2030 Olympic Winter Games
The French Alps project for the 2030 Winter Olympics is based around four clusters (Haute-Savoie, Savoie, Briançonnais and Nice).
Nice will be at the heart of the Games, hosting all the events in the “Ice” section. The Stadium of Nice will be transformed into a temple of ice hockey, with two ice rinks and over 30,000 seats for 75 matches. The Palais Nikaïa will host 150 curling matches. Nice will also host 16 figure skating sessions and 9 short-track events. This concentration of ice events will make Nice a centre of excellence for winter sports, boosting its appeal to tourists and sports enthusiasts alike.
The closing ceremony could be held on the Promenade des Anglais, offering the people of Nice and visitors alike a memorable outdoor finale, with the Baie des Anges and the Mediterranean as a backdrop!
The 2030 Olympics in the French Alps will leave a lasting legacy for Nice: a 1,500-bed Olympic village that will later become student and social housing, meeting the city’s housing needs. A new 5,000-seat ice rink for figure skating and short-track will remain in place for the long term, providing the people of Nice and the region’s sports enthusiasts with state-of-the-art facilities for years to come. This infrastructure will contribute to Nice’s economic and sporting development well beyond 2030.
Nice Côte d’Azur, an exceptional and renowned playground for the biggest international sporting events!
